Kids thrive when they have something fun to look forward to while on vacation. So sit back, relax, and let us help you find the best kid-friendly activities at the Big South Fork that you and your family can enjoy on your next trip into the forest:
1. Become a Junior Ranger
Kids love anything that makes them feel involved and proud of their accomplishments. Most national parks, including the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, have a Junior Ranger program for kids of all ages to enjoy. Simply pick up your Junior Ranger Booklet at one of the visitor centers within the park and complete the tasks within the booklet. Activities don’t take too long and encourage your children to interact with the park through games, activities, and stories.
Turn in the completed booklet to a park ranger and receive a Junior Ranger badge! Your kids will be so excited to accomplish the tasks and it will help them understand more about all of the beauty within the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area.
2. Take a Kid-Friendly Hike
Over 150 miles of marked trails await you in this hiker’s paradise. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the trail and give your little ones a backpack and something to carry to help them feel included in the hike. You’ll find a wide variety of trails that range in difficulty from easy to difficult.
A good introductory hike for kids is the Bandy Creek Loop that is an easy 1.3 miles. For those older kids, consider the Split Bow Arch trail that is 1.3 miles round trip or the Gentleman’s Swimming Hole which is a moderate 0.4-mile hike with a swimming hole at the end.
