Horseback riding is one of the most popular activities in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. A network of hundreds of miles of equine trails criss-cross the 125,000-acre national park, which has been recognized as one of the top horseback riding destinations in the eastern U.S. Horseback riders can stable their horses at select cabins at Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat and access the trails directly from the retreat. There are also trailheads located at several locations throughout the park.
The autumn months are the most popular time for horseback riding in the Big South Fork, while other riders enjoy the peace and quiet of the BSF's equine trails during the winter months. During the spring, thousands of dogwood and red bud trees are in bloom in the Big South Fork backcountry, along with a wide variety of wildflowers, and waterfalls are often at their best during the spring months. Wildflowers continue blooming throughout the summer in the park.
